My Baby's First Month in SoftBums- Shannon's Summary

As I sit here on my LAST day of maternity leave and reflect on my last 8 weeks being a new mom, cloth diaper explorer and blogger, I feel like crying. I am so sad that I won’t be around my Otis 24/7! At least he doesn’t have to go to daycare as his dad and I are working opposite schedules so one of us is always home. I have probably gone thru nearly 2000 wipes, 850 diaper changes (with cloth) and have saved nearly 300 dollars in disposable diapers.  It has been so much fun documenting my cloth diaper adventures and I have learned so much! I absolutely LOVE SoftBums!!

I have learned that I prefer Aplix. This preference was due mainly because my LO had an in-between size belly for snaps and I couldn’t succeed with a leak-free diaper change so I sold them on the Softbums B/S/T on facebook. I may regret this decision down the road as his hands become more capable. ;)

Things I have learned:

  • It is essential to loosen the elastics for a good fit. Tight elastics make leaks happen and red marks on the legs.

  • Get bigger inserts sooner- They may make the bum look bigger but there are less leaks, less wardrobe changes and THEY GROW SO FAST! My little guy was 6lbs 15 oz when he was born. I started cloth diapering at 2 weeks right after his cord fell off which he was 7lbs 6oz and now he is about 12.5-13 lbs and the mini’s aren’t working so I ordered bigger ones but I have limited supply right now and I have a lot more leaks even with 2 minis.
  • When  you travel it is so much easier to just have a large wetbag in the back of the car to store the wet diapers.
  • Bamboo SuperPods ROCK for overnight diapers.

  • Check points on every diaper change are essential.  Check the legs, swoop the back and make sure you put the waist on with legs down.

In hopes of helping others just starting out with a newborn I created this quick SoftBums Newborn video tutorial!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7QxsxUtSIA

Laundry:

-I've found that starting your laundry in the evening so the diapers can go on the line right away in the morning.  This took me nearly 6 weeks to figure out.

My Favorite Cloth Diapering Gear:

  • -My Planet Wise wet/dry bag for town diaper changes
  • My Kelty Kids backpack that came with a really compact changing pad for a diaper bag
  • Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm

Stuff I wasted my money on:

  • -Probably too many mini pods yet I can use them as doublers and once we have a second child we will probably need both doublers and minis again for a mini bum.
  • Disposable liners- Maybe I will like them down the line when we introduce solids and the poo is REALLY nasty.

Favorite SoftBums Diaper Combos:

I LOVE my Bamboo SuperPods currently on smallest setting . They absorb so much, are nice and soft and they will grow with Otis. I have only 1 Omni which I will be getting more as I like them at night and once Otis goes to daycare using them as a pocket will make it much easier for the provider.

My favorite shell right now is probably Moonlight.

The PUL is a different texture than most of the others and seems to be softer and more comfortable. I get a wonderful fit and it’s a solid but it is unique enough to bring some fun in to his outfits.  My favorite print is Cowies although I haven’t used it on Otis more than twice total. In fact, I sold it. It had snaps. I’d love to get one with aplix but it is by far one of the cutest prints.

So as I end this blog, I advise families who will cloth diaper their babies;

  • Stick with SoftBums- learn the system very well, become an expert. You only have to keep track of one general type of things (shells, pods, wipes and bottom balm-only 4 things). Also having one system makes it easy for your significant other to learn, grandma and grandpa and their acceptance of it will improve.

  • Have fun with it. Find the things that make diapering fun. I love to tell Otis that I am going to put chocolate on his butt. Although it’s a shell color it also sounds very goofy.
  • Let your family enjoy the process. I let dad pick a bundle of the shell colors. He is a solids kind of guy and I’m a print kind of girl. We each have our favorites but it lets them participate and adopt the idea more fully.

Things on my mind about cloth diapers:

I have changed so many diapers in the last 8 weeks that I am very comfortable with it. I do have leaks now and then and I figure out why then fix it. My husband has learned some stuff from me but is far behind me in numbers, trial and error and video watching.  I hope as I am off to work tomorrow he does okay with it. I did make a tutorial video and I hope he watches it if he needs to.

I worry that dad won’t be on board with the laundry routine once he learns about the loads and the 2 cycle routine.

I can’t wait to buy more. I don’t know why I love diapers so much. It seems like there is almost a love affair with them. You first buy them simply for the colors and prints, then, it grows into a conquering ritual as you want to avoid leaks, rash, and banana crotch. With those goals you watch videos, practice a ton and become so satisfied when you “get” it.

I’m going to miss my morning routine and seeing the beauty of natural fibers and colors basking in the sun drying all on their own.  They cost no more than a few minutes of my effort to put them on the line.

With that, the Pitt family is signing off. We hope you enjoy your cloth diapering experience. Fall in love with the money savings and instead of dreading the giant garbage load, smile at the pretty colors on your clothes line and start adding it up.

We hope you find help as I did on Softbums Superfan Facebook page, perhaps buy them cheaper on the B/S/T group and that you adopt the notion that cloth really is better.  Finally remember, you do this all because you care about your baby, and the world you are shaping around them.

My Baby's First Month in SoftBums- Pitty's Summary

Our first month had come to an end and we were still happy to be using SoftBums.

We expanded our stash 5-6 more shells and 6 more pods so we only have to wash every 3 days. We kept up with using cloth wipes as well since it was so much more convenient then disposables. During this first month it was definitely all about trial and error when getting the perfect fit on a newborn especially a wiggly one. But SoftBums truly is a one size fits all diaper. Even my husband who at first thought I was crazy to want to use cloth diapers jumped on the band wagon and loves that we switched over.
My favorites are: still echos since our little girl is almost 11lbs now. And we are still using mini pods during the day.
My go to diaper is: still sugar and spice. (good thing I now own 2 of them!)
My husband's favorite: fingerpaint echo!
Not much else has changed though since we got a good routine down with the wash and the fit of our diapers! It has been a great adventure so far and I look forward to cloth diapering using SoftBums for many years to come!

My Baby's First Month in SoftBums- Shannon Week 4

A day (weekend) in the life of Otis, Shannon and Justin AND Scout, and Riley and Oliver

That is the list of all of us in a truck; 3 people and 3 dogs. We headed to Iowa last weekend to help move our horses there for the winter.

Grandma and Grandpa Pitt came to pick up the horses and we had to bring them their boat so on the road we went.  365 miles, and a 7 week old in a car seat……this should be fun.
I got everyone at home ready and drove into town to pick up Justin and hit the road about noon. I got the little man all in his carseat and ready but then we had a meltdown and needed a quick change even if on the tailgate, it works.

We got on the road, and wouldn’t you know 30 minutes on the road and Otis was hungry. I had tried pumping while on the road a couple of weekends ago and giving him a bottle but I’m not sure if it was the position in the carseat or what but he kept choking. This trip I wasn’t going to put up with that so we had to stop so I could nurse him.

I set up our diaper changes with a wetbag in the back of the truck as my wet/dry bag is not huge and would just be tricky. Then we utilize the driver’s seat as a changing station and then air out our used diapers on the headrest of the passenger front seat.  This road trip included about 5 stops for feeding and diaper changes an extra 3 for extra changes as I have a man who doesn’t like to be wet.   What is normally at 7 hour trip took us 10. Uffda!

Thank goodness for my mother in law who let me do diaper laundry.  I tried to stay out of her way and not impose on her laundry so I did mine overnight now I have totally switched to overnight laundry.  I LOVE this new routine compared to my starting laundry in the AM.  I can now have my diapers on the line about 45 min after waking up. This has cut out almost all dry time in the dryer other than a little fluff to get them soft at the end of the day (or when it’s raining J).

Things I didn’t love about cloth diapering on the road:

  • Having diapers all over the car airing out.

  • Not having a diaper sprayer.

Things I LOVE about cloth diapering on the road:

  • I can actually succeed at diapering since I apparently suck with disposables and get leaks all the time when I’ve tried them.
  • Having part of my home routine on the road-makes me feel more comfortable.
  • Being able to coordinate super cute diapers with his outfits when we are on the road visiting people.

Overall the weekend went really well and I had diapers clean and dry when I got home thanks to my new night diaper routine!!

Continue to follow Shannon & Otis on their journey into cloth diapering each week throughout this series of My Baby's First Month in SoftBums!

Check back next week because you don't want to miss an awesome surprise Shannon has made for fellow new moms reading this series ..

Newborn Fit Checklist

SO you've got your babies diaper stash" sitting pretty" in your nice and neat organized changing table. Surely you prepped them once, ok maybe twice because you have been so anxious for this baby to come. Well now the baby is here and your home from the hospital and you are so full of crazy hormones you are freaking out whether or not you are even putting these things on right?

Hey mama don't fret! We are here for you! Every mom has been in this situation regardless of what type of diaper they are using. So take a second, take a deep breath and lets get into this!

How to get the BEST fit with your SoftBums on your newborn baby!

  1. Lets start with the leg elastic:

Newborn babies are wiggly and hate being cold. Well how the heck are you supposed to measure and size these leg elastic's when the baby wont stop moving and crying?

You have three options:
  1. (Shortcut) Take a disposable you got from the hospital and lay the shell over that to size the leg elastic down.
  2. (Customized) Measure your babies thigh when they are eating or bathing or whenever they are most happy! They wont care, just take a fabric tape measure and measure the part of their thigh where the shell would sit. Take the thigh measurement and subtract an inch and a half.
  3. (Free-style) Size the leg elastic to bigger than it should be. Pull the ends of the leg elastic out of the shell, Lay your baby down and secure the Velcro crossing over the waist, get a hold of the toggle and pinch that down and pull the elastic with the other hand till tight enough that there aren't any gaps, and you can comfortably fit 2 finger between the shell and the babies leg.

2. Once you got the leg elastic down next comes the fit of the pod & shell.

  • Pull pod up high against baby’s body so that the tip of the pod is in line with the middle of the Velcro of the shell above.
  • Make sure the pod isn't sticking out the top, legs or back. This will cause wicking onto clothing. The pod should still be about ½ inch below the top of the diaper. NOTE: If your little one likes to curl their legs up onto their tummy, you may have to pull them down to ensure proper pod placement.

  • Crossing waist tabs over: on newborns you need to cross the waist tabs over one another to ensure a tight fit and prevent leaks out the top and back. If your trying to avoid the umbilical stump be sure to have the back of the shell as high as their belly button and then pull the front up and pull the waist tabs around at an angle to form a v shape in the front. (pictured below)
  • Try 2 minis fanned out for more coverage or a OS pod as some newborns' are heavy wetter's.
  • It should look a bit baggy in the crotch when the pod is in place correctly

3. Be sure to use correct detergent and correct amount, too much may give rash, leaks, and stink.

 SoftBums' Diaper Detergents recommendations:
  • Eco Sprout
  • Lulu in the Fluff
  • Rockin' Green Soap
  • Country Save
  • Purex Free and Clear

Natural detergents may seem like a good idea but they often contain softeners or oils which leave a coating on fabrics and may impede the absorbency of diapers.

Detergents to avoid for these reasons include:

  • Dreft
  • Planet
  • ECOS
  • Seventh Generation
  • Ecover
  • Bio-kleen

Note: Homemade detergent is a great solution for your family's clothes but it is not recommended for cloth diapers.

How Much Detergent?

If you are using a cloth diaper specific detergent (like Rockin Green) then follow their suggestion for amount per load.
If you are using a general laundry detergent (like Purex F&C) then for general washing use 1/4 of the recommended amount for the load.

Note* the diapers should not smell like anything once they are washed and dried. If you hint a detergent scent you are probably using too much (try using 1 tbsp less) . If they still smell dirty you are not using enough (try adding 1 tbsp)
Here is a helpful stink charts to further help resolve stink issues & explain in more detail: http://paddedtushstats.com/2012/03/06/help-my-diapers-stink-tips-resolving-whiffing-woes/

4. Newborn Poop Leg Leaks:

Cause: Its runny, slick & shoots out fast, its basically butter (churned up breastmilk or formula) the pod in some cases already is saturated with urine or just cannot absorb the stuff in enough time before it rolls down the length of the pod and onto the shell where it quickly finds its way out. If in a seated position can be caused from compression.

Solution:
  • Putting the shell in the dryer for 15min on high to seal the sewing seams.
  • Changing often (especially with poops)
  • Adding additional absorbency (easy way to add a bit of absorbency without bulk for a newborn, use a baby washcloth or cloth wipe behind the pod).
  • Making sure fit is good -no inserts shifting or legs too tight causing compression leaking.
Even with all of these things it can still happen, but newborns do outgrow this stage (and some never have this issue to start with). When changing the diaper make sure the legs are down and not curled up in their lap. If curled up when securing the diaper, once they kick down, the pod will also go down and leaks will happen.

5. Absorbency & Shell Rotation:

With newborns most parent's find the mini pods or (small) pods to be suitable for the first month or so. Although some babies come out heavy wetters and need more absorbency from the start. If you are sure your pods are fully prepped (3-5 washes or more for bamboo) then your baby might just be ready for a more absorbing pod. Our Superpods are the perfect next step up and are meant to give you more changes in the beginning using the mini pod and OS pod on the small setting.

Shells: Typically in the beginning shells are only able to be reused maybe once due to the fact that newborns poop almost every diaper change. As your child gets older you will be able to reuse the shell more during the same day. The key to being able to reuse the shell is rotation. Keeping 3-4 shells in a rotation during a day will allow time for each to dry out before the next diaper change. If one gets soiled toss that one into the diaper pail and put a new one into the rotation. At the end of the day toss them all into the diaper pail and start fresh the next day. Some find they are able to reuse shells the next day if they were only used once the day before but with newborns this is hardly the case.
